Summer Stars 2018
The
Summer Stars programme is open to all children across the country and provides
an ideal opportunity for everyone to read their favourite books. The Summerstars
Reading activity encourages the children to actively spend time and read books
during the summer vacation which is a great way to distract them from spending
hours continuously watching television or playing video/computer games. This
boosts their confidence, social interaction and brings out their creativity
with a whole new perspective.
Registration
is open towards the end of school term and you can register in your local
library. This is a free registration. As usual the books will have to be returned
as per normal norms of your library rules. When you register, you will get a
card with the child’s name and slots for the names of books he/she reads. Each
time a child completes reading two books and returns it, the librarian will
reward your child with a gift. The gift ranges from pencils to wrist bands to
pull string bags.
When
the card is complete and the child has read all the books they will receive the
Certificate of Achievement for Summerstars Library Reading Adventure. It shows
they have used their summer vacation hours to read books and improve their
reading skills, increase knowledge and learn new things. The summerstars also
have other fun activities apart from reading books like drawing, colouring,
playing games, etc. You can find out more details from their website www.summerstars.ie which also has many
online resources to help families with the development of their children’s
reading and learning abilities. All school going children will find this very
fun and useful and will go a long way in assisting their academics too. They
provide a lot of tips and helpful ways for book reading for children of all
ages, groups and interests.
This
is the third year of Summer Stars programme in Ireland and last year over 3000
kids participated in libraries across County Wicklow with the help of Local
Government Management Agency. Counties Cork and Galway saw the highest number
of participants.
The
Summer Stars Twitter account is @starsreading and you can follow their Facebook
and Instagram accounts at Summer Stars at your Library. Along with the Moblie
Library Service, 13 libraries are successfully operated under The Wicklow
County Council. The website www.wicklow.ie
will help you locate your nearest local library.
