What was expected to be a close, competitive and one hell of a match by UFC fans worldwide at UFC 229 on 6 October 2018, turned out to be a totally one-sided performance completely dominated by defending UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov when he made Ireland’s Conor McGregor tap out in the fourth round.

The 30 year old Khabib Abdulmanapovich Nurmagomedov is a Russian professional Mixed Martial Artist (MMA) of Avar ethnicity, a two-time Combat Sambo World Champion and the reigning undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion. He currently holds the longest undefeated streak in MMA, with 27 wins, and remains undefeated in professional MMA. Hailing from Russia's Dagestan region, he is the first Russian to win a UFC title. As of October 8, 2018, he is ranked #2 in the official UFC pound-for-pound rankings.

Conor Anthony McGregor, the 30 year old Irish professional MMA and boxer, is a former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight and Lightweight Champion. In 2015, at UFC 194, he defeated José Aldo for the UFC Featherweight Championship via knockout thirteen seconds into the first round, which is the fastest victory in UFC title fight history. Upon defeating Eddie Alvarez for the UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 205, McGregor became the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight divisions simultaneously. He has also competed as a Welterweight in MMA and Light Middleweight in Boxing. As of October 8, 2018, he is ranked number 8 in the UFC's pound for pound rankings.

The Conor-Khabib match was preceded by a series of public taunts, insults and high pressure tensions between the two. Both UFC stars have been suspended by Nevada regulators following their brawl inside and outside of the Octagon in Las Vegas last weekend. They were sent letters by Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) Executive Bob Bennett yesterday informing them about the ten day suspension, which will be effective from October 15. He said that the NAC could extend the suspension when they meet on October 24. Neither athlete has yet commented on the suspension. UFC President Dana White said that he was disappointed and that there would be fines and suspensions.

McGregor one of the most toughest and popular UFC fighter, nicknamed The Notorious/ Mystic Mac, delivered an incredibly poor performance upon his long-awaited return to the Octagon, eventually tapping out in the fourth round as Nurmagomedov preserved his flawless professional record and defended his crown. Without a doubt he was the better fighter and fought like a true champion.

In the post-match interview, Khabib, nicknamed The Eagle, apologized to the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) and said he was provoked by McGregor's trash-talk, insults on his religion and family and the UFC 223 bus incident. He also said Dillon Danis kept on provoking him from the ringside.

McGregor is the biggest pay-per-view (PPV) draw in MMA history, having headlined four out of the six highest-selling UFC pay-per-view events. His headline bout with Khabib at UFC 229 drew 2.4 million PPV buys, the most ever for an MMA event. His boxing match with Mayweather drew 4.3 million PPV buys in North America, the second most in history.

McGregor’s response after the match was “Good match. Let’s have a rematch.”
