Lidl has opened its new branch in Baltinglass County Wicklow today (Thursday, 28 May 2026), thanks to the committed, relentless and sincere efforts of Jane Nolan Lehane, the people’s Leader of Baltinglass.

6 years in the making- FACEBOOK GROUP BALTINGLASS NEEDS A SUPERMARKET

Six years back, the Facebook group Baltinglass needs a Supermarket was started. The local shops are great and we will always support them, but there is a price difference especially when bulk shopping is done and residents were hoping that one of the bigger supermarkets would make a difference at a time when prices of commodities and services are rapidly increasing on a national level. This financial burden was highlighted by a local Barbara Gethings in Facebook and the group was formed and Jane took up the initiative with others to ensure that a little effort goes a long way in helping those in need.

For the last 6 years, Jane took the pain to make petitions, do polls, conduct meetings with the residents, politicians, supermarket heads, do polls, draft development plans, talk on East Coast FM station and follow up with everything. She and her Team worked very hard and today Baltinglass has got a new Lidl Supermarket. Thank you Jane and Team!

We will still support our local shops that have always supported us all these years and we hope that all shops and businesses of Baltinglass flourish together with the help of the entire community.

The store, right beside O Reillys Petrol Station, looks great with so many products and it was full of shoppers the moment the doors were open. At 8am today the store was opened with Ella Parke (Baltinglass local and Wicklow LGFA star) officially cutting the ribbon. As part of its opening day celebrations, Batinglass GAA/LGFA Club received a donation of €1000 in Lidl vouchers. Also, the first ten shoppers received gift vouchers to redeem instore and free ice cream was also given out. Having supported 13 local charities in county Wicklow last year, Lidl Ireland currently employs more than 6,000 employees in its 191 stores.
