David (8) finally solves the Rubik’s Cube

Little David finally solved the Rubik’s Cube on his own. It took him almost two months to learn it by watching tutorial videos of two You Tubers Bright Side and Ethan Garvey. He tried to learn from other You Tube channels too but it was a little difficult for him to understand. He learnt the first two layers from Bright Side’s video but the last layer felt very complicated for him. So that’s how he came across Ethan’s video which explained how to solve the Rubik’s Cube last layer and it was very easy for him to understand. He solved it just few minutes after 12am on New Year’s Day 2022. We were waiting to wish everyone Happy New Year and as the waiting time was pretty long, he decided to keep going with the Cube and continued it even after the New Year greetings. And within 5 days he also taught his elder brother Daniel and now they both solve the Rubik’s Cube. And they were both very very happy. And to celebrate the special occasion we ordered Pizza, chicken goujons and chips. Yummy!

Here is Little David (8) solving the Rubik’s Cube:

Here, David Jacob Sumod solves the Rubik’s Cube and the background music is Megalovonia which he played on the keyboard.

Little David with Rubik's Cube
First time

In my life, this is the first time I have seen someone solve it whether its my family or friends. I have few friends who love the Rubik’s Cube but haven’t yet solved it though. There may be few of my friends who can solve it but none that I am aware of though. One of my best friend’s kid is a champion at solving the cube and he is the only one in my circle who I have seen solving the cube. I have played with the cube in my childhood but never came close to solving even one side of it. So that is why this is a happy moment for us. Rubik’s Cube is fun and there are different ways to solve it. You can follow the instructions or watch tutorial videos. But be patient and keep trying and you can finally solve it.

About Rubik’s Cube

The Rubik’s Cube was invented by a Hungarian Sculptor Ernő Rubik in 1974. He was also a Professor of Architecture and made a deal with the company Toy Corp to sell the toy puzzle. Originally called Magic Cube, the 3-D combination puzzle became so popular that it also won the German Game of the Year Special Award for Best Puzzle in 1980 and also similar Best Toy awards in US, UK and France. It was such a craze in the 1980s that not only did almost every household owned a Rubik’s Cube but it was also a stressbuster for so many people working in offices and other institutions. It is estimated that in the early 1980s the worldwide sales of Rubik’s Cube was around 200 million. The Guinness Book of World Records held a speedcubing championship in Munich, Germany in 1981 and reports about the cube craze in New Scientist, Scientific American and Washington Post print medias only helped in accelerating its popularity. ABC Television even developed a cartoon show called Rubik, the Amazing Cube.

Rubik’s Cube Different Versions

Over the years different versions of the cube had been released. The original Rubik’s Cube was a classic which had six faces covered by nine stickers of solid colours each with Orange, Green, Yellow, White, Red and Blue. Later, the stickers were replaced by plastic panels in the same colour format. Cubes of other companies made similar to Rubik’s Cube have also added more faces, dimensions and colours adding to the variety of cubes in the market. The common cubes are the Pocket or Mini Cube (2x2x2), the Original or Standard (3x3x3), Rubik’s Revenge or Master (4x4x4) and the Professor’s Cube (5x5x5). Other variations include 15x15x15, the Over The Top cube (17x17x17), a 22x22x22 working design and even a 33x33x33. The mechanical cube variants include Twist Puzzles, Rubik’s Magic, and 360. The Twisty cube versions are made in different geometric shapes like the shape changing Rubik’s Snake, Square One, Octahedron (Skewb Diamond), Tetrahedron (Pyraminx), Icosahedron (Dogic) and Dodecahedron (Megaminx).

The electronics versions are Rubik’s Revolution and Rubik’s TouchCube (revealed on 15 February 2009 at the American International Toy Fair in New York) with touch, slide, hints, lights and self-solving features.

In 2011, Oskar Van Deventer made a 17x17x17 cube and received the Largest Order Rubik’s Magic Cube award by Guinness World Records. However, this record was claimed to be broken by Grégoire Pfennig with his 33x33x33 cube on 2 December 2017 and he also announced another world record with a 2x2x50 cube on 8 April 2018.

Rubik’s Cube Speedcubing World Championship

The First official Rubik’s Cube World Championship was held in Budapest, Hungary in June 1982. The international governing body of Rubik’s Cube, World Cube Association, resumed the tournament in Toronto with 83 participants in 2003 (2003 World Rubik’s Games Championship) organising worldwide competitions since then.

Rubik's Cube Cartoon ABC TV
Rubik the Amazing Cube Cartoon

A cartoon show based on Rubik’ Cube, ‘Rubik, the Amazing Cube’, was developed by ABC Television in September 1983. I remember watching it as a kid while I was studying in Indian School Bahrain. Channel 55 was the national channel, but I think I saw it in Saudi Arabia Aramco Channel 3 or Qatar Channel 33. Anyway, it was a popular animated series and aired reruns upto 1985. The show, directed by Rudy Larriva, John Kimball and Norm McCabe had 13 half an hour episodes each and was about a magic Rubik’s Cube that had special powers including flying and could only come alive when he was solved by his friends so they could escape from an evil magician.

Best-selling Toy Puzzle Book

In the US, in 1981, the top 3 books out of the top ten best-selling books were on how to solve the Rubik’s Cube. The Simple Solution to Rubik’s Cube by James G. Nourse was the no.1 best-selling book in 1981 selling over 6 million copies. Besides these, You Can Do the Cube by Patrick Bossert in 1981 and Notes on Rubik’s “Magic Cube” in 1980 are few of the other notable prints in the early 80s.

World’s Best Selling Puzzle Game Toy

The Rubik’s Cube was exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1981 and a 6 foot Cube was displayed at the World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1982.

Also, Google has released the Chrome Cube Lab interactive website where customised versions of Rubik’s Cube can be created and uploaded. This is in association with Ernő Rubik.

The company for Rubik’s Cube is Rubik's Brand Ltd (Spin Master). It is the world’s best selling toy, puzzle toy and puzzle game with sales of over 350 million cubes as of January 2009.
